Hey NSBE!

Winter quarter is here! Hopefully after that beautiful, month-long break you all are ready to gear up for another ten weeks.


Perhaps last quarter was your first quarter, and it was a little rough; or maybe it wasn’t your first quarter, but things still didn't go like you wanted them to. Don’t come into this new quarter discouraged, feeling like a failure or hung up on mistakes and missteps of the past. Hopefully there are some things that you can learn from those mistakes and take with you into this new quarter to help you better succeed. Be inspired by the quote of the month,

 “One who fears failure limits his activities. Failure is only the opportunity to more intelligently begin again.” --Henry Ford.

Here are some tools/resources to help you in the next quarter:

CLAS tutorial services- Free bi-weekly tutorial sessions to supplement the classes you are taking and offer extra help. To sign-up for available sessions, click here.  

NSBE Study Room- Come enjoy this quiet place to study Monday-Thursday from 7-10pm in South Hall 1430. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays a math grad student is in the room from 7-8pm to assist anyone in all class levels. Take advantage of this great privilege!

NSBE Study Groups- E-mail Nicole as soon as possible so she can group you with other people taking your same classes. Study groups meet together weekly and go over material, homework, and can review for tests together. This is definitely one of the most effective ways to study.

 Professor/T.A.’s office hours- I know it can be a little intimidating, but they really want to help you. Grab a buddy from your class and go check it out. It’s also a really great opportunity to get to know your professors which will come in handy later on for letters of rec ;)

Tuesday 9/20 -- 12PM to 2PM -- Chemistry Lawn

And NSBE will also be at the STEM Expo at Oxnard College this Tuesday 9AM to 12PM.

 As part of the Science and Technology MESA Day Publications Committee my partner Michelle and I were given the opportunity to do a presentation at a local junior high school. It has not been long since we were once in their shoes so Michelle and I were excited to share our advice with them as first years in college. We had told the students at La Cumbre Junior High that STEM fields are challenging but worth the hard work and effort put into them. It was truly rewarding to see the group of students attend and enjoy what we had to offer on S and T Day. Some may think “science and math all day everyday, why would I allow such a thing to seep into my Saturday mornings?” For Science and Technology Day I'm glad I made the exception!

As a first year at UCSB in my second quarter the tedious work that consumed the sunshine of my days and sleep of my nights had begun to pull me into the depths of some gloomy state of mind. I was too busy banging my head against the hard covered textbooks of my chemistry and math classes and lost sight of why I even liked science in the first place. One very early morning I was reminded once again. The beauty of STEM is that it is applicable to our lives today. There is nothing that you would learn that you could not find useful today. And most importantly I was reminded that it is FUN. Watching the younger students apply their knowledge and creativity to the egg drop contraptions and cheer for their surviving eggs was one of many fun activities during lunch. Although I worked at the volunteer table for most of the day I had the opportunity to escort an enthusiastic group of high schoolers to their mousetrap competition. I was impressed that although all the competitors were instructed to create the same thing the mouse car traps were all their own unique models. Although my duty was only to escort them I found myself drawn into the competition as the groups worked intensively to readjust their models. I only wish I had the same opportunity as they did to compete and attend workshops when I was in Junior High and High School.

I think that the S and T Day was a success because it was not only a day for scientific events but also a day to socialize with peers and enjoy doing the work together. Also, everybody seemed to have enjoyed themselves doing activities that were not only fun, but beneficial to the expansion of their knowledge. I look forward to seeing these MESA groups as well as non-MESA groups again next time around and hope the students were inspired to go hard in the paint for the next big step, COLLEGE =). I am glad to have been a part of an event with such a solid goal for its participants.

This year, NSBE was invited to the Corporate Affiliates Board meeting, which is comprised of many of the larger corporate decision makers in the Santa Barbara area and some from the east coast. Being the first student organization allowed to present at a meeting, NSBE took the opportunity to network and promote our group to the 30 various engineering and science based companies such as Rayethon, Novacoast, Lockheed Martin and Thermos Fisher. With the new connection made, NSBE hopes to develop a strong and efficient gateway into the corporate world for our members.

With the stresses of midterms and other college duties, LI and NSBE lightened up the mood with a fun 5 on 5 basketball game between the two orgs. The game was held November 7th at the Rec Cen. With everyone taking part in the game, the players got to work as a team and build bonds with members in their own org and the org they were playing against. In the end, NSBE won by 6 points =D! I hope everyone is ready for our LI vs. NSBE Soccer match coming soon!

Hey NSBE members! We are starting a test bank. This is an easy way for everyone to share their knowledge on classes and professors in the STEM fields. By looking at each others mistakes, we can grow as students and be better prepared for midterms and finals. The test bank can be found in our study hours everyday or you can give your test to any of our executive members. All test will be accepted and appreciated.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by our table at the African American Awareness Social. Our first meeting will take place on Monday, September 27th, from 8pm to 9:30 pm in Girvetz 2128 and there will be food.
