NSBE is an ACADEMIC org
The primary goal for NSBE during the academic year is to retain African Americans in the STEM fields. A far too common trend is that many African Americans will enter UCSB in the STEM fields and will end up switching before they have finished with their first year. NSBE has a few strategies that they will implement in order to prevent this from happening as often.
NSBE's Classroom Initiative
The NSBE Classroom will be in South Hall 1430 from Monday through Thursday from 7pm to 10pm. This will give NSBE members a place that they can come to get work done and receive help. We feel that part of the reason some minorities have a difficult time within STEM is because they feel alone. The classroom will give these students an opportunity to see and work with other students that are going through the same challenges and anxieties. Hopefully, by meeting three or four times a week, the discomfort of loneliness can be reduced or removed entirely. So come join us if you ever need a place to study.
NSBE Study Groups
When NSBE members sign up, they are asked to list their STEM courses. We then find students that are taking the same class and group them together. Each group is required to meet for at least 1 hour a week to study, do homework, or just talk about the class. The ability to discuss the subject matter with other students can give students a sense of confidence that we hope will carry on into exams. Study groups also keep the individual members accountable.
